Austin Wrinkle is a versatile percussionist
who has studied drumming from near and far. A strong drumset background
fueled a desire to expand his musical knowledge of other cultures. This
quest for knowledge led him to California Institute of the Arts where he
studied music of many cultures and earned both master's degree and a bachelor's
degree in Percussion and North Indian Music respectively.
In addition to studying hand drumming with John Bergamo since 1992, Austin has also studied under tabla maestro Pandit Swapan Chaudhuri since 1992. In 1996 he attended the Ali Akbar College of Music, and in 1997 traveled throughout India, broadening his understanding of Indian music and culture. Furthermore, he has studied South Indian music with South Indian master drummer Poovalur Sriji. He has also studied Western Classical Percussion and mallets with David Johnson, and West African drumming with Alfred Ladzekpo.
In addition to Hands On'Semble, Austin is also currently a member of the rock/jazz/world fusion group PLOTZ!, and is a founding member of the world fusion group Hindugrass. He collaborates with many musicians in the Southern California area and maintains a steady schedule of teaching and performing.
