Born in Chicago
in 1955, composer and hand percussionist ADAM RUDOLPH has been in the
vanguard of the development of cross-cultural improvisational music for
over 20 years.
Rudolph has performed at festivals and concerts throughout North & South
America, Europe, and Japan with Don Cherry, Yusef Lateef, L. Shankar, Jon Hassel,
Pharoah Sanders, and Hassan Hakmoun, among others. Rudolph is co-founder of
the Eternal Wind ensemble, and, along with Foday Musa Suso, of the Mandingo
Griot Society. He is currently leading his own ensemble, "Adam Rudolph's
Moving Pictures" which recently appeared at several major European music
festivals. He was featured soloist with the Koln Radio Orchestra in the premiere
of Yusef Lateef's African -American Epic Suite.
Years of performance and research into the music forms, languages, instrumentation
and cosmologies of Africa, Europe, the Middle East, Asia, and the African Diaspora
have given Rudolph the background and experience to create a unique improvisational
art form. Rudolph performs on a wide range of instruments, including hand percussion
(congas, djembe, bendir, dumbek, tabla, talking drum, kalimba, udu ), didjeridoo,
multiphonic singing, and electronics.
One of the first musicians ever to experiment with cross-cultural improvisation,
Adam Rudolph's pioneering vision goes beyond his masterful playing and combining
of diverse global styles...his unique expression is shaped by an extraordinary
philosophical perspective in which the cosmology of the various cultures he
embraces is applied toward the music making process. Combining music making
ideas from around the globe, Rudolph's compositions weave what he terms "an
audio syncretic musical fabric."
Rudolph has received commissions and grants from the Rockefeller Foundation
I Meet the Composer, Mary Flagler Cary Trust, and the NEA. He has appeared
on numerous recordings for many major labels, including Warner Bros., Capitol,
EMI, Island, Polygram, and Atlantic.
